Home

What is a home for you? How does it feel ‘at home’? How do you think you want to feel ‘at home’? It can be many specific things but for most people, feeling ‘at home’ means they want to feel seen, acknowledged, understood, accepted, appreciated, loved, cared for, safe, free (in an ideal “Home’). At home, one can openly show their authentic thoughts and feelings. They can be vulnerable, they can get space they need, the peace they need. Many of us find that, in spite of our parents doing as best as they could, we have struggled to feel some or all of the above things at our home when we grew up.

All of us parents wish to provide for our children in all possible ways. We think of the material things we desired as a child or the material things we felt a lack of as a child and we try to make up for what we missed out on. Let’s also expand this attitude towards intangible psychological needs. Let’s make all the effort to make our children feel seen, acknowledged, understood, accepted, appreciated, loved, cared for, safe and free. Let’s strive to build a sense of Home for them where they can flourish optimally and holistically.

Activity:

What are the intangible things you associate with an ideal home?

How can you make those feelings a part of your child’s life today?

What actions do you need to stop in order to achieve this?

What actions can you do regularly in order to achieve this?
