Peek-a-boo – Aajol

Peek-a-boo

The classic game which is a hit for the first few years of life across the board irrespective of languages, cultures, places, genders etc is the game of peek-a-boo. The game is rich with learning and connection opportunities.

The interaction of focused attention between the child and the caregiver is precious, it helps the child in forming and strengthening attachments.

The rhythm of hiding and revealing oneself along with the accompanying sounds, the rhythm of making and breaking eye contact in a rhythmic fashion is also helpful in forming and strengthening attachments.

The shared joy of the child and the caregiver is absolutely irreplaceable when it comes to forming the sense of safety and feeling warmth and love for the baby.

The dynamic expressions of the caregiver not only engages the baby but also serves as a model for accessing and expressing joy for the baby.

The sense of connection through the shared joy is a great sense of safety for the baby.

Certain variations of this game also help build on these aspects further for further learning.

Activity:

For example, a variation of peek a boo:

The parent hides behind an object, for example a curtain. The other caregiver asks the child, “where did mom/dad go? Are they behind the table? Are they behind the door? Are they behind the curtain?” and then the hiding parent reveals themselves.

In addition to the above benefits, this provides an opportunity to help the baby identify different objects around the house.

Come up with your own version of peek a boo with your child.
